Thinning Hair in Women Why It Happens & What Helps

Hair loss in women is when a woman unexpectedly loses a lot of hair. Most of the time, people lose between 50 and 100 single hairs each day. Some hairs come and fall out while others grow in. This is part of how nature works. But how come it happen, and what can you do to help?

Today, Rawnsley Hair Restoration will discuss this matter to help you get the proper treatment for your hair matters. Check out this blog post for more details.

Hair Loss & Thinning Hair

Losing hair is different from shedding hair. Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. Hair grows on almost every part of your body except your palms, soles, lips, and eyelids.

Vellus hair is short, thin, and light. Terminal hair is thicker, darker, and longer than androgenic hair. When something’s imbalanced in your hormones, this can cause hair loss.

How Often Do Women Lose Hair?

Many people think that only men lose their hair. But it is believed that more than half of women will noticeably lose hair. Female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) is women’s leading cause of hair loss. It affects about one-third of women at risk, about 30 million women in the United States.

Which Women Most Likely Lose Their Hair?

Hair loss can happen to any girl or woman. But it’s more likely to occur in:

  • Women who are over 40.
  • Women who just gave birth.
  • Women who have had chemotherapy or who have been affected by other medicines.
  • Women who have tight ponytails or braids or who use harsh chemicals on their hair.
  • Menopausal women.

What are the most common things that make women lose their hair?

So, Why Do People, in General, Lose Hair?

There can be several factors, but most probably, these are the reasons:

  • Hairstyle: Certain hairstyles, like tight ponytails, braids, and corn rows, can cause hair loss by pulling on the roots. The name for this kind of hair loss is traction alopecia. Damage to hair follicles can cause permanent hair loss.
  • Vitamin deficiency.
  • Dieting (rapid weight loss) (rapid weight loss).
  • Diets with limits.
  • Overworked head of hair (breakage).

When done by a skilled surgeon, Follicular Unit Transplantation with the traditional “strip” harvest of hair from the donor site is almost impossible to notice. But a scar on the back of the head was often the only way to tell if hair surgery worked.

When done by Dr. Rawnsley, FUE is the last step that makes this procedure completely undetectable. But how can it work?

All About Fue

FUE at Rawnsley Hair Restoration stands for “follicular unit extraction,” It is a method that first worked in the 1980s. But the surgeon had to remove each follicular unit, a natural grouping of one to four hairs, by hand.

Doing this by hand took the surgeon a lot of time and cost the patient a lot of money. Yet, this problem is solved by Dr. Rawnsley’s innovative automated follicular unit extraction system, which saves a lot of time and money.

How Does It Function?

Our automated follicular unit extraction system is easy to understand. It uses a guided extractor to make tiny cuts (less than 1 millimeter wide) around each hair follicle on the back of your head.

The units are taken out with suction, which reduces the amount of handling and increases the survival rate of transplanted grafts. The units are then put in ready spots on the front of your scalp.

Why Consider FUE?

The automated FUE system developed by Dr. Rawnsley is an exciting new way to treat hair loss. Still, it may only be suitable for some. A first evaluation will be needed to determine if this procedure is correct for you based on your type of hair loss and other factors.

But the new automated FUE machine is the best solution for most hair loss patients we see. It has a lot of advantages over the older method of strip harvesting, such as:

  • Less time to finish
  • No lines of scars (hair can be worn very short without having to worry)
  • Less time is needed to heal, and less activity is limited after treatment. No stitches are required.
  • The graft survival rate is higher than when FUE is done by hand.
  • Patients with strip harvesting before and whose scalps are now too tight for the older method can use this method.

With Dr. Rawnsley’s new automated follicular unit extraction system, strip harvesting is no longer the only way to treat hair loss.

This new, cutting-edge system has many advantages over strip harvesting. For example, it reduces scarring and recovery time. It makes hair restoration possible for people who wouldn’t have been able to get it otherwise.

Thinning Hair & Menopause

During menopause, your hair could go through one of two changes. You might get hair where you didn’t have any before. Or, your hair is getting thinner. One reason could be that hormone levels change during menopause.

When the levels of estrogen and progesterone drop, the effects of androgens, which are male hormones, get stronger. Because hair follicles get smaller, hair may get finer (thinner) during and after menopause.

When these things happen, hair grows slowly and falls out more often. To help you deal with changes in hair growth, your doctor will do a thorough exam and get a detailed medical history.

Your doctor may tell you to get a test to see how much iron or thyroid hormone you have in your body.

Prevention

You can’t stop hair loss when it’s caused by a disease, getting older, your genes, or a physical stressor like an injury. You can prevent hair loss caused by harsh chemicals or tight hairstyles by not using them or wearing your hair in those ways.

You can stop hair loss if you eat a healthy diet full of the vitamins, minerals, and protein your body needs. You don’t have to smoke. Hair loss can make you feel bad, caused by genes, a disease, or stress.

Know that you can try some treatments and that there are experts in dermatology who can help you. As soon as you notice something is wrong, you should see a doctor. The sooner you start treatment, the better.
